Exit Interviews are worth the time and effort! Team member experience is a valuable assessment tool for any employer. In fact, a company's efficiency and effectiveness can best be gauged by those team members that have performed a variety of tasks, duties, and responsibilities. Even though a team member may wish to voluntarily terminate their company allegiance, or they are no longer deemed a "true fit" (involuntary termination), these team members have compiled a plethora of observations, occurrences, and impressions. Thus, it behooves an employer to address these team member experiences via an exit interview. An Exit Interview may provide additional insight into the following operation topics:
- areas for improvement;
- risk opportunities;
- asset management - optimal management vs. mismanagement;
- training needs/requirements;
- team member philosophies -are they aligned with company's mission statement and vision;
- identified SWOT factors: (S)-strengths, (W)-weakness, (o)-opportunities, (T)- threats;
- benefits provided- meet the needs of team members, value-added-benefits, wish list, perks, enticements, entitlements;
- reasoning or rationale for leaving;
- perception of company as a whole-subjective vs. objective.
Who should conduct the Exit Interview?
It is best to have an impartial professional perform the Exit Interview. Normally, the interview is performed by an independent party with no direct affiliation to the company. Team members can become more open/communicative with an impartial party. Also, since the interviewer does not know company culture, the questions submitted can become more probing and require more definition or elaboration. At no time should the team member be pressed for answers or explanations.
A write up of responses and interpretations can be forwarded to senior management in order to best represent a summation of the interview content. This content has value!
